Planetree Headquarters Offices
Situated in a converted Griffin Hospital patient wing in Derby, Connecticut, Planetree headquarters had been cramped and sterile – the opposite of Planetree’s design philosophy favoring dignified yet tranquil environments conducive to health, healing, and a sense of safety and well-being – until Kahn collaborated with Planetree to completely re-imagine it. Operating under a tight budget yet still mindful of Planetree’s guiding principles, Kahn devised a transformative 2500 square foot redesign intended to reflect the warm Planetree culture, sustain its caring philosophy, and embody the cozy, interactive aesthetic it consistently promotes for its members. Creating a sense of place for both solitude and social activity, the kitchen’s oval-shaped “conversation island” is the beating heart of the community – the space around which staff and visitors alike congregate to discuss matters both large and small. The flexible and informal conference area functions as an open living room, encouraging both mobility and comfort. And a long banquette-type sofa spans the entire gathering space, with small mobile tables available for quick lunches, lengthy meetings, and everything in between. Glass side lights and shaded mesh partitions harvest streams of indirect daylight, and a warm Tuscan color palette of meadow greens and reddish tangerine straw complements earthy, bamboo-like carpeting and leaf-patterned wall coverings. With the inherent warmth and soothing nature of abundant wood and crown moldings, soft curved walls and soffits, arcing dropped ceilings, an aquarium, and a stone fireplace, Kahn designers have brought a true sense of nature into Planetree’s interior spaces.
