Thompson Tractor Corporate Rebuild Center
As a principal dealer for Caterpillar equipment, Thompson Tractor is deeply involved in dismantling, refurbishing, and rebuilding used Caterpillar engines, transmissions and final-drive components. When its original rebuild center became outdated, Thompson hired Kahn to provide architectural and engineering planning for a state-of-the-art, $3-million renovation. Kahn’s architects faced a complex task in phasing: build the new rebuild center, move into it, then renovate the old structure – now attached to the new one – without interrupting production. A series of specification modifications meant the project underwent several redesigns. It was nonetheless completed on time and under budget. more...
Large Caterpillar systems accumulate volumes of used oil and sludge that require periodic removal (in fact, some Thompson Tractor factories are heated by furnaces that use this recycled oil.) Kahn, working closely with Thompson, developed an environmentally-friendly system for draining and re-processing those substances. Totaling 21,000 square feet, the buildings houses a transmission test bench, two dynamometer test cells, twenty half-ton jib cranes, and a 15-ton crane spanning 75 feet.
