Delta Dental Corporate Office Expansion
The Delta Dental of Michigan corporate office expansion involves a three-phase renovation and addition process that encompasses four different buildings. Building 1 is the original 1970s headquarters, with a 1990s addition nearly doubling its size to the existing 159,958-square-feet. Kahn‘s challenge was to turn this dark brick building into a noticeable, positive presence, which it primarily accomplished by stripping its exterior façade and creating the principal arch expression now reflected in every campus building. A 25,000-square-foot addition on the west creates a new front lobby exposure and a complete overhaul of Delta Dental’s image – more inviting, with a rounded glass entry and looming overlapping shapes more in harmony with nature. more...
The 91,500-square-foot north addition, or Building 2, is connected to Building 1 by a skyway and a tunnel but is otherwise self-sufficient. Curving along and enveloping the enlarged and revitalized pond, this four-story building houses open office space on its first two floors, executive offices on the third, and a glass-enclosed, oval-shaped board room overlooking the pond and the Oval, which serves as the campus centerpiece. The “cafetorium” – a flexible dining room/meeting hall that comfortably accommodates 250 to 500 people depending on its configuration – is this building’s signature feature. Building 3 is a 1,800-square-foot maintenance garage featuring a large wall that screens the site’s electrical equipment. At the back of the site is Building 4, the Data Center – a 22,500-square-foot reinforced bunker-like structure that houses and protects Delta Dental’s critical information and technology. This building employs the same palette of materials as the other campus buildings, including matching brick and limestone.
