RESEARCH ON ALBERT KAHN
The University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library holds many collections
on Albert Kahn. The Albert Kahn Papers offer researchers the opportunity to study the correspondence, transcripts of
speeches, photographs and architectural
drawings of the preeminent, American, industrial
architect. The Albert Kahn Family Papers collection holds the personal correspondence of Albert and his wife Ernestine,
family photographs and a folder of materials
related to the community's efforts to "Save
Old Main." In addition, images of 273 of
Albert Kahn's sketches of European architecture,
drawn during his trips of 1891, 1911-1912,
1920, and 1924-1925, are available for
online viewing at the website of the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

The Albert Kahn Papers at the Bentley Historical Library
On March 21, 2003 (the 134th anniversary of Kahn's birthday),
the Albert Kahn Family of Companies donated
this collection to the Bentley Historical Library at the University
of Michigan to ensure
the conservation and accessibility of these
papers. Through this gift, Kahn has shown its commitment to preserving
the legacy of Albert Kahn,
whose factories on five continents influenced
the development of industrial architecture and whose commercial, residential
and institutional buildings
define the character of Detroit and the University
of Michigan today. The collection encompasses many linear feet of correspondence,
transcripts
of speeches, newspaper and journal articles
and photographs of projects under construction and following completion,
as well as thousands of
architectural drawings of over 100 of his buildings.
The Albert Kahn Papers are comprised of six series: Personal Papers, Professional
Papers, Photographs, Photographs of Completed Buildings in Leather
Portfolios, Audio-Visual Materials and Project Records. The narrative
and visual materials in these series illuminate the breadth of Kahn's
career from Job Number 1, Braceford House (ca. 1896), designed shortly
after the founding of his first firm, Nettleton, Kahn and Trowbridge,
to his last great project before his death, the Ford Motor Company
Willow Run Bomber Plant (1941). In pairing the textual materials with
the photographs and architectural drawings associated with his buildings,
this collection offers a rich perspective on the master architect himself,
illuminating his personal views on his own architecture and its place
in a changing and often tumultuous world. The finding aid for this
collection can be found on the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library.
Related Materials at the Bentley Historical Library
The Albert Kahn Family Papers were donated in 2002 by Carol Kahn, daughter of Albert Kahn's son Edgar.
Included in this collection are the personal correspondence of Albert and his wife Ernestine, family photographs and a
folder of materials related to the community's efforts to "Save Old Main" (1989), University of Michigan Hospital,
which her grandfather designed in 1919. The finding aid for this collection can be found on the
University of Michigan
Bentley Historical Library.
