A Leader Who Listens
Steve Whitney, FAIA, LEED® AP, has been a member of Kahn’s Board of Directors since 1986 and served as its President from 1999 to 2009 as well as its CEO since 2001. In his first year of full-time employment as an architect, his Minneapolis firm sent him to the office of TAC, a high-profile Cambridge, Massachusetts, firm, to participate in a joint venture design of the massive University of Minnesota Health Sciences Expansion, and by the time Kahn was awarded the University of Michigan Replacement Hospital project in 1979 Steve had accumulated more hospital experience than any young architect could have hoped for. Kahn wooed him and brought him in as Lead Project Architect. “It’s been a huge growth opportunity for me – going from Project Architect to running a technical department to forming and running the market focus Health Care Group to being on the Board and ultimately having this job,” Steve says. more...
Steve credits Kahn’s people for the firm’s continued success – “People learn so much here, and they enjoy coming to work” – and he is especially proud and protective of its legacy. “Our people appreciate our history and like to tell others about it. Albert Kahn had such an impeccable reputation, and we aspire to be our clients’ ‘trusted advisor’ because that’s what we believe Albert was.” “I’d like my own legacy to be one of expanding the firm well beyond a single market and single office focus into a regional if not a national and international practice that is well known for quality – and, of course, for being our clients’ trusted advisor.”
