Southern Steward
After gaining invaluable experience at two of the largest architectural and engineering firms in the region, Simon Yendle, AIA, NCARB, LEED® AP, formed a Birmingham-based architectural firm, SRW & Associates, and shared clients and projects with Kahn for nearly a decade before the two firms joined forces in a 2002 merger. Simon had long since created and enjoyed an extensive repertoire of clients – particularly in the health care area – as well as a growing reputation and a hard-fought autonomy. So a merger with a larger, more well-known firm was no small matter. Yet to hear Simon tell it, it was a relatively simple process – primarily because it was the end-result of a friendship formed bit by bit, until nothing made sense except that the two firms should become one. more...
“We provide similar services, and there were obvious synergies,” Simon says, “but the main thing was that Kahn has such good people, and we’ve approached one another as family.” As a family man with deep religious faith, it’s essential to Simon that he balance his work with his home life; given an unexpected sunny afternoon off, he says, he’d probably just go out and fly a kite with his wife and their three young daughters. But his work at Kahn thrills him, too. “What sets Kahn apart is our values. We have very, very talented people, but most importantly we have expertise and experience, and our clients trust us to tell them what’s best.” And during his short Kahn stint, Simon says he’s already seen important changes – such as the firm’s rebranding efforts and its strategic board focus – that bode well for what he considers Kahn’s “very bright” future. “I’m excited about things,” he says. “I’m excited.”
