A Unique Perspective
After earning her master of architecture degree at The University of Michigan, Detroit area native Cindy Pozolo, AIA, NCARB, LEED® AP, joined Kahn and stayed there. But as far as Cindy’s concerned she’s had a more diverse career than many of her peers who have traveled from city to city or job to job. “Even though I have spent my career in one place, Kahn has such a variety of assignments and experiences that the challenges and opportunities are nearly limitless,” Cindy says. She also says the projects that likely defined her career were those that grew out of its Special Projects Group, which Kahn first formed in the early 1990s. “We applied the model of a small firm within our larger firm,” Cindy says, “and defined a whole new way of doing business for a particular type of client,” she says. more...
Since 2004 Cindy has been Director of Architectural Development – the firm’s largest department. She’s the firm’s first female department head – and its first female Principal and Vice President. In December 2009 she also became the first elected female to serve on Kahn’s Board of Directors. And she takes great pride in these accomplishments. “I have always felt pressure to be a role model here, but I don’t believe they’ve ever made gender part of my job here so I try not to emphasize it.” Cindy is most impressed with Kahn’s encouragement of individual development and she is intent on hiring and retaining people of varying backgrounds as she grows her department. “It’s important that we hire people who are experts in the different market segments we serve, and cultivate and train them. We’ve got an incredible range of talented people here who are very committed. We ask a lot of them. They’re very busy. But I deal with them candidly and fairly and I believe they appreciate that.”
