Three computers on three tables—in 1998, that was the sum total of equipment in the office that would become Kahn South, Inc. And the office was a living room. “We walked in, plugged in the computers, and away we went,” remembers Ron Ramsbacher, LEED® AP, Regional Director of Finance at the Kahn Birmingham, Alabama office. “It’s an eye-opening experience to open your own business. Once you find a way to make things work, you take a step back and say, ‘Wow, that’s pretty neat.’” more...
Things are definitely working now at Kahn South, Inc. The firm has grown considerably since those early days, and Ron deserves a good part of the credit. He started the firm—then called SRW & Associates—with Simon Yendle, an architect, and Wallace Williams, an interior designer. Ron was the businessman, charged with overseeing the finances and, as the firm grew, human resources, information technology—all the infrastructure needed to sustain the growing practice. “For a while, I took out the trash and vacuumed the carpet,” he laughs. “I was there – and still am, I hope – to free up Simon and Wallace and our other people to do what they do, and that's to attend to the business of architecture and design.” The firm’s strong reputation suggests that Ron and his partners have found the right mix of creativity and efficiency. “We laugh about it,” he says, “because the finance world is black and white. Either the numbers add up or they don’t. Now, with design folks, their thought process is more free-flowing. I have loosened up a little bit and I hope those guys have tightened up a little bit. We meet in the middle on a lot of things.”
