Founded in 1895, Albert Kahn Associates (Kahn) kicks off its 125th year of celebration with an outdoor self-guided walking tour on September 19
Kahn is launching a free interactive map that locates past and current projects around the world
Detroit, Michigan. September 15, 2020 – 125 years and 45,000 projects later, Albert Kahn Associates, Inc., is still designing and engineering facilities that revolutionize their client’s industries. Founded as one of the first integrated architecture and engineering firms, Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a kick-off event on September 19.
From its headquarters in Detroit, Kahn has designed and engineered projects worldwide. From significant industrial and automotive facilities, research and testing spaces, university and educational buildings, hospitals and healthcare spaces, corporate office campuses, to urban waterfront and development projects, among many others, the team at Kahn has done it all.
This significant milestone has allowed us to reflect on where we have been, and plan for where we are going. “Our overarching goal for the future is to provide the highest quality service, guided by the Kahn Values – Integrity, Professionalism, Respect, Pride, and Passion,” explained Alan Cobb, FAIA, current President and CEO of Kahn.
In collaboration with Design Core Detroit and the Month of Design, we are kicking off our anniversary celebration with a free outdoor walking tour in the heart of downtown Detroit. This tour will mark the launch of a new Albert Kahn interactive map that allows users to create personalized tours of Kahn buildings in Detroit and around the globe. From 10 am to 1 pm on September 19, Kahn volunteers will be stationed along the downtown route to answer any questions. Our celebration of the firm started by Albert, “the Architect of Detroit,” is about our clients, employees, and the communities we engage with every day. Everything we do, we do for our clients - they got us to where we are today, and we are honored to have relationships that stretch almost our entire history - some over 110 years. Many of our talented and devoted employees have committed their careers to the firm - several celebrating 40 to 50 years. “Our tremendous people bring innovation to every project,” explained Cobb. They have trained younger generations and upheld the culture of the firm. “The Kahn Brand sets the standard for the A/E marketplace,” he continued. “Our legacy is about quality, focusing on speed to market because our design teams understand that time is money for our clients.”
As we celebrate where we have been, we look forward to continuing our legacy in the years ahead. In Detroit, we will expand our work across multiple campuses with Henry Ford Health Systems, continue to infuse new life along the Detroit Riverfront, and continue our renovations on the Detroit Opera House, each playing a substantial role in our great city. Another project gaining traction is the upcoming renovation of the historic Detroit Creamery Building for Olympia Development, which also happens to be an original Albert Kahn building. Beyond Detroit, we have several exciting projects, such as the new headquarters expansion and new office buildings for Erie Insurance and a significant redevelopment in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. Combining new mixed-use structures with the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, Kahn’s work with the Erie Downtown Development Corporation with transform this Midwest Rust-Belt city and provide a strategy for future city development. Kahn will continue to be a visionary leader, as we serve our clients and partners in our many market sectors including Industrial, Corporate, Healthcare, Education, Adaptive Reuse, and Urban Design.
