Ford House Receives 2023 Cultural Landscape Award

The restored Albert Kahn and Jens Jensen-designed pool, lagoon, and landscape at Ford House has won the 2023 Cultural Landscape Award from the Michigan Historic Preservation Network.

Albert Kahn Associates worked hand-in-hand with the team at Ford House on their most extensive restoration to date. Kahn's landscape architects used original architectural drawings, planting plans, family videos, and historic photographs to guide the restoration - always ready to adapt as new evidence emerged!

The project included repairing and restoring the 185,000-gallon pool with an infinity edge, mechanical infrastructure, surrounding stone hardscape, lagoon, and iconic landscape. An entire team of skilled craftspersons worked with Kahn and Ford House to deliver the final project. Now, the restored area fulfills the original design intent, with the addition of universal accessibility principles and sensory opportunities to increase access and improve the visitor experience.

Project Principal and Kahn's Director of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, Stephen White, ASLA, accepted the award with Ford House's Director of Preservation, Rebecca Torsell.
