Detroit International Riverwalk
Detroit, MI
The General Motors Plaza and Promenade, designed by Kahn and Hargreaves Associates, is a vital link in the chain of riverfront public open spaces, and an exciting transformation of the GM Renaissance Center complex. The modular stainless steel railing system is removable along a section of the seawall, designed for temporary docking. The promenade extends eastward past a series of distinct garden rooms that are designed to relate to future mixed-use and residential developments.
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy worked with Kahn to complete the waterfront promenade along the Detroit River between the Civic Center Riverfront Promenade and Gabriel Richard Park by creating unique places that are safe and universally inclusive. These destinations provide opportunities for social interaction and community growth. The main focus of the project was the “Beached Schooner” water feature at Mt. Elliott Park.
